The Roaring Twenties are back, but this time around, we don't have to settle for moonshine. A hundred years after the start of prohibition, Manhattan is once again home to a legal whiskey distillery, and it's certainly cause to celebrate.
Introducing Great Jones Distilling Co., the swankiest new haunt for whiskey lovers and booze connoisseurs in the city. Spanning multiple floors across 28,000-square-feet, the custom-built and designed distillery has taken over an 82-year-old building with prohibition history of its own in NoHo (during the six-year renovation, a secret tunnel was found underground, thought to have been used to transport whiskey and other spirits into New York).
From tours and tastings to the upcoming debut of a restaurant, speakeasy and event venue this September, Great Jones Distilling Co. offers patrons unique dining and sipping experiences in a range of seriously luxe settings.
The monumental new arrival is the brainchild of Proximo Spirits owner and 11th generation spirits maker Juan Domingo Beckmann, who, of course, oversaw the production of the distillery's three signature whiskeys, Great Jones Straight Bourbon, Great Jones Four Grain Bourbon, and Great Jones Rye Whiskey, all produced with 100% New York-sourced grain from the Black Dirt region upstate.
"For 11 generations my family has crafted some of the world’s leading spirits, and we are proud to introduce a bourbon that truly embodies the best of New York State ingredients and the ‘lightning in a bottle’ energy of Manhattan," Beckmann said in a statement.
In addition to multiple bar rooms, a lounge, and the full-service restaurant helmed by Executive Chef Adam Raksin, the whiskey-fueled watering hole also features a retail space where visitors can snag their own bottles of Great Jones spirits and merchandise from local makers.
Per Beckmann, "The Great Jones Distillery will give the city a new spirits legacy, and is dedicated to the resiliency and hustle that New Yorkers have shown to the world over this past year."
