It kills me that many of you don't know who Anne Slater is. For decades she was one of the most recognizable society doyennes on the scene.
Born and raised in Ohio, her father was an executive in the steel industry. But Ohio living didn't last long for Anne. Upon turning 17, she moved to New York to attend Finch Junior College and never looked back. Married three times in her life - first to a shipping heir, next to a successful businessman, and lastly to her devoted companion of over 40 years, John Cahill - she was nobody's plus one.
Perhaps you remember her by her famous quote? "A woman needs four animals in her life: a mink in the closet, a Jaguar in the garage, a tiger in bed and an ass to pay for it all." Armed with a great wit and incomparable elegance, the in-demand guest was a most gracious hostess, entertaining the likes of Gloria Vanderbilt, Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby, Cary Grant, Fred Astaire and more in her epic fifth avenue apartment.
Impeccably dressed and dripping in sophistication, you'd know Anne anywhere by her genius cobalt blue rimmed and tinted glasses. Never afraid to repeat an outfit, and stick to her signature style (girl loved a black dress, black pumps and fun jacket), she's a timeless sartorial inspiration.
