Charlie Chaplin
Marlon Brando called him "an egotistical tyrant and a penny-pincher." Orson Welles declared him the "cheapest man who ever lived."
The comedy king of silent movies made millions back in his day, but still managed to live like one of his most famous characters, "The Tramp," IRL. Chaplin never had any money on him and, like many others on this list, always had other people pick up the check. He even skimped when it came to building his Beverly Hills home, saving money by hiring movie set carpenters. The result was such a shoddily built structure that it was nicknamed "The Breakaway House."
