As the world pauses to question the ways in which it so desperately needs to change, no stone must be left unturned or unexamined. In Manhattan, the world of elite, prestigious private schools has prided itself on never having been the picture of inclusivity. A sad, but not shocking truth that's been accepted for far too long. But now, at least one such institution's student body has had enough.
The Brearley School, an incredibly well known all girls school on the Upper East Side, has finally come under attack for its abysmal lack and treatment of diversity. While the school's hefty annual tuition of over $50,000 excludes a huge number of potential students in general, of the school's 700 students, only 6.4 percent are black.
And of that incredibly small minority who have gone on to join the sisterhood of notable alumnae such as Caroline Kennedy and Kyra Sedgwick, a huge majority have had to pay an even more expensive cost.
Three days ago, Black students and graduates of the school began sharing their stories of racism on Instagram, creating the account @Blackatbrearley "for all Black folks, past and present, who The Brearley School never let belong." The posts paint an incredibly upsetting picture of students suffering at the hand of an insensitive faculty and racist student body.
This other-ing and emotional abuse experienced by these students is surely not unique to Brearely, and should be a call to all academic institutions to dismantle the privilege they've cherished and celebrated for decades.
