Veselka
Open since 1954, Veselka has seen a lot of downtown New York history. One can only wonder if Allen Ginsberg ever cut into a pillowy, steamed pierogi? But what we do know for sure is you should totally head to this East Village eatery. Known for its extensive (and delicious) Ukranian fare, the seemingly never-ending menu is sure to satisfy your 2 AM craving. Open 24 hours, you can spontaneously order up a plate of fried cheese arugala and goat cheese pierogis ($6.95 for four, $10.95 for 7) served with a side of sautéed onions, apple sauce, and sour cream. If you’re really ravenous, get stuffed with bigos, a hearty Ukranian Hunter’s-style stew made with Kielbasa, roast pork, sauerkraut and onions and served with mashed potatoes and one additional side ($16.75). Not in the mood for ethnic food? They serve American classics like pancakes made from scratch and smoked turkey BLTs ($11.95).
