Early Life
Born in Dallas, Texas and raised in Vancouver, Botez began playing chess when she was just 6 years old with her father, an engineer who immigrated from Romania, after he bet her mother he could teach her to play in just two weeks. He quickly realized she had major talent, and began bringing her to local parks to play against the old timers at the boards... who didn't take her seriously until she beat them.
