More than two decades after tragedy struck, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the ultimate '90s It Couple, continue to fascinate the public. So much so, that Ryan Murphy, the hit-making TV writer, director, and producer (who we're convinced doesn't sleep) has chosen their blue blooded love story as the focus of his latest spin-off anthology series, American Love Story.
Joining the ranks of Murphy's other FX shows focusing on dramatic pop culture moments, including American Crime Story (The People v. O.J. Simpson and The Assassination of Gianni Versace), the new series will explore the "sweeping true love stories that captured the world’s attention." Considering just how much the young, rich, and gorgeous Kennedy couple dominated headlines at the time, their romance certainly seems a fitting one for the title's debut.
A synopsis for the season reads, "What started out as a beautiful union for the young couple, widely regarded as American royalty, began to fray under the stress of the relentless microscope and navel gaze of tabloid media. The pressures of their careers and rumored family discord ended with their tragic deaths when his private plane crashed into the ocean on a hazy summer night off the coast of Massachusetts."
While the release date and, more importantly, casting choices for the show have yet to be announced, we're sure to expect a glittering, over-the-top retelling of the tale in signature Ryan Murphy style.
Not exactly the type of thing we imagine would garner the approval of the rest of the Kennedy family, though.
