What's A "Sex And The City" Reboot Without Samantha Jones?!

by Stephanie Maida · January 11, 2021

Seeing as Sex and the City has been my comfort show since I was old enough to figure out how to watch it without my parents' knowledge (I was about 13 when the series finale aired), you would think that I'd be thrilled about the recently-confirmed reboot heading to HBO Max. I mean, after the shitshow that was the second the SATC movie, I do think the girls deserve a better send-off into the pop culture ether.

But while seemingly everyone I follow on Instagram reposted Sarah Jessica Parker's video teaser to their stories this weekend, I just couldn't stir up any excitement. Why? Because Kim Cattrall, a.k.a. Samantha Jones, a.k.a. the series' best character, would not be returning.

The next chapter, titled, And Just Like That... will star Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. In a response to a comment on her IG post suggesting that she disliked Cattrall, SJP wrote, "No. I don't dislike her. I've never said that. Never would. Samantha isn't part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do."

Cattrall, for her part, has frequently voiced that she would not reprise her role as Jones or in any capacity to the SATC franchise. She's also publicized her contentious relationship with Parker on a number of occasions, including an Instagram post directed at her former co-star following her brother's death in 2018

So yeah, I don't think anyone was expecting her to return to her place in the TV foursome, but it does totally suck. Without her, who will be the unabashedly sex-positive voice of reason? The feminist icon of confidence? The supplier of the best one-liners? The woman who confirms that you really don't need a man to be happy?

I think this Tweet pretty much sums it up:

Le sigh. At least we'll always have these iconic moments:
