On Monday, the ever-lovable John Oliver made television history. With a charmingly awkward flourish, Oliver pressed an arbitrary red button as he forgave nearly $15 million in medical debt that he had previously bought. Now, this is the biggest TV giveaway ever, nearly doubling the worth of Oprah's oft-quoted "You get a car! You get a car! Everybody.gets.a.car!" moment. And John couldn't have been more earnest and less mockable as he did it. The structure of his show, Last Week Tonight, allows him to rant for ~15 minutes on any topic he chooses. Which, in turn, allows us to admire him for his zeal and to actually really want to learn the news.
