Ashley is the only child of Joe and Jill Biden, but has always had a close relationship with her older brothers, Beau (who passed away from a brain tumor in 2015) and Hunter, Joe's children with his late first wife, Nealia. In a 2018 profile of Ashley, her mother recalled, "From the minute she was born, her brothers looked after her. And, she always looked up to them. Wherever they went, she wanted to go, and they took her."
