No More Sex And The City Comparisons Please

carrie vs rachelleOne thing I noticed in the recent spat between GOFG and DBTH is the negative comments lobbed at Rachelle, namely by Solish, calling her "a typical sex and the city wannabe". What? What does this mean? Do we lack such creativity that we now compare all female bloggers to Carrie Bradshaw, even if there is simply no relation? Sure you can call Rachelle a country bumpkin, naive at times, but a 30 year-old dating columnist she is not. We already made the painfully obvious observation that if Carrie Bradshaw was a blogger today, she would of course be Julia Allison.

But it gets better. The next criticism is that well if she isn't Carrie reincarnate, then she represents the whole post Sex and the City fallout that has harmed Manhattan. Okay, let's think about this for a second. Do you really think SATC begot a new Manhattan culture, or rather was indicative of a pre-existing culture? If you think the former is true then you have way too much confidence in the clairvoyant abilities and influence of television writers. Of course the later is in fact true. SATC aimed to capture what was going on in Manhattan during a time period when women were becoming independent, and were nothing like our mothers' generation. Whether you agree with it, or hate it, don't label all women with it.
